Stargazing Night - Moon, Saturn and Mars Observation (5-7-2014)

The final stargazing activity of the year was held when one of the best moon phases was in its full glory - the majestic Apennines Mountains right along the terminator! We compared the view in the eyepiece with that in the Moon Globe app in iPad and identified some of the most famous features on the moon. The narrow rille in Alpine Valley provided a fun challenge and some of us were able to resolve it when the thin clouds dissipated more. Saturn and Mars, despite a few months away from their oppositions, still provided lots of details for us to enjoy. We ended the night with photographing the moon with smartphones and small cameras. Although the quality of the images could not be great, it was fun to find out what pictures could be obtained by such a simple method.
