Observation of Comet ISON and Lovejoy (17-11-2013)

4 comets were observable just before dawn and we made an effort to see them. Comet Lovejoy was high in the sky and was easily observable in binoculars. Using an 16 inch dobsonian telescope, the view was interesting but nothing spectacular. The most anticipated 'comet of the century', Comet ISON, was very low in the sky. Less than two weeks before it passed very close to the sun, the fuzzy nucleus was found by a random search with the big scope. It was an unremarkable sight for something fantastically special - a dirty snowball bornt during the birth of solar system at the Oort Cloud on its first visit to the sun for an epic encounter between ice and fire. (On 28-11-2013, ISON disintegrated just a few hours before perihelion.)
