Partial Solar Eclipse Observation (22-7-2009)

A spectacular partial solar eclipse occurred in Hong Kong between 8:14am and 10:46am, and the weather was perfect for our observation. Over 60% of the sun was obstructed by the moon at 9:26am, and such big eclipse only occurs a few times in many people's lives even if the weather cooperates! Thousands of people in Hong Kong enjoyed the event, and we had a our great party on the rooftop of our school. Around the time of maximum eclipse, students took a break from their supplementary classes and went to the roof. Together with many teachers and supporting staff members, solar shades and filters were shared for observation and photography. Some students brought their own binoculars with DIY solar filter to enjoy a magnified view. In particular, we had a lot of fun with pin-hole projection and some of us even paid attention to the strange behaviour of our own shadow, with one edge being fuzzier than the other. The next solar eclipse will be observable on 15 January 2010. See you on the roof after school at 4:54pm.
